Please Join Oxfam to Help Save Lives across South East Asia

Multiple disasters have struck South East Asia over the past 10 days. On 26 September, Tropical Storm Ketsana swept across the Philippines and then headed into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos; on 30 September, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck Sumatra. Tens of thousands of people were displaced across the region, and the death toll is mounting.
Many of the people who have been hit by the disasters were already impoverished and have few resources to cope. These vulnerable communities include urban people as well as rural farmers. Poorer people, especially women and girls, are at great risk.
OXFAM’S ACTION
Oxfam is committed to help poor communities in developing countries. We are planning to allocate HK$1,000,000 for humanitarian relief in the region, and are already at work alongside our local partner organisations to save lives and to help survivors cope.
Indonesia Earthquake:
- Oxfam has provided tarpaulin as shelter for the worst hit 5,000 people. Oxfam and partners in the country are assessing what people need in terms of other essentials, such as water, sanitation and food.
Tropical Storm Ketsana:
- PHILIPPINES: provided water, blankets, soap, sanitation equipment, clothing, water containers and other items to help 125,000 of the worst affected people; also providing small cash grants and shelter to evacuation sites as part of our initial response.
- CENTRAL VIETNAM: will provide 40,000 people with food and water supplies, run hygiene promotion programmes, and help people restart their livelihoods; a team of aid experts has been sent toKon Tum.
- CAMBODIA: distributed waterproof sheets, water filters and buckets to 1,250 rural people who had been evacuated to high land. Oxfam also conducted training on hygiene and on how to use the water filters.
- LAOS: sent teams to conduct assessments for disaster response.
